GreenPLS - Properties of LEDs

Enhanced properties of the LEDs include but are not limited to:

  1. REDUCE energy consumption over conventional lighting. . .LEDs reduce energy consumption by converting a higher proportion of electricity into visible light. This efficiency is expected to continue. Traffic light energy usage over traditional bulbs is estimated to be a 94% savings.
  1. REDUCED light loss and light pollution with INCREASED directional control of LED light streams. . .There is minimal light loss with LEDs. LEDs do not require color filter to produce colored lights. LEDs are directional to the front causing better control of the light. This allows light to be direct to the task with less light pollution.
  1. REDUCED breakage due to vibration and impact resistance. . .LED lighting is able to resist vibration and impact resulting in less breakage.
  1. INCREASED safety with lower voltage and direct current attributes. . .LEDs offer an advantage in safety. The lower voltage and direct current attributes are safer for workmen.
  1. INCREASED dimming, motion and control characteristics. . .LEDs can be controlled with dimming and motion sensors for brightness. The sensors can detect when light is not needed and will automatically adjust the brightness of the light. This is extremely beneficial in commercial applications especially in the hotel business. If guests leave a room with a light on, the motion sensors can lower the lights. The same can be done in seldom used corridors.
  1. REDUCED heat emissions . . . Little to no heat is emitted with LED lights. The lower radiant heat may significantly lower the energy use for air-conditioning or refrigeration.
  1. NO FLICKER irritation. . .The flicker that is common place for traditional lights is not found in LED lights. LED does not flicker.
  1. REDUCED toxicity. . .There is negligible toxicity with LEDs which is good for our fragile environment. Tube lights can be filled with mercury and other gases. The disposal of damaged fluorescent and other gas filled bulbs is time consuming and costly.
  1. LONGER operating life. . .LEDs have a long operating life. Commercial/municipal applications with street lights can expect an exceedingly longer life with the use of LEDs. If a LED light were to operate for 12 hours a day, the life expectancy would be approximately 11 ½ years or 50,000 hours as compared to the life of less than 10,000 hours or 2 years for high pressure sodium street-lights.  LEDs have multiple diodes which will not likely fail simultaneously. The LED diodes gradually dim over a prolong period of time instead of just burning out. With fewer failed lights companies and/or municipalities save time and money with less frequent and costly replacement of bulbs. With this 5 times longer life, the lower cost of maintenance and the lower energy costs LEDs are estimated to save up to 50% over high pressure sodium lighting. The liability involved with burned out traffic lights is reduced.
  1. REDUCED storage and shipping costs. . .Since LEDs are small and weigh less, less storage space is needed and shipping costs are reduced.

  2. INCREASED battery applications for emergency lighting needs. . .There are back up battery packs available for LED lighting. This allows for continued traffic flow in time of black outs. This is critical for lighting for paths and stairways.

  3. INCREASED color signage opportunities. . .Creating unique electrical signs are virtually unlimited with LED lights. These electrical signs are efficient in energy usage and reliability.   LEDs can produce only the color that is needed. There are unlimited colors available. Traditional lights can only create color by filtering through limited colored surfaces. Think of the wide applications in street lights, exit signs, decorative holiday lights, etc. that are available with LEDs.

  4. INCREASED energy efficiency. . .LEDs have overall improved energy efficiency allowing them to produce more light per watt than incandescent bulbs.

  5. keyboardREDUCED size allows for increased application opportunities…LED lights are very small in physical size making them the choice in use in areas that have very little space for installation such as printed circuit boards designed to backlight LCDs or to illuminate a keyboard button or key. The introduction of LEDs with its modern capacities and capabilities offers a number of advantages over the traditional incandescent, fluorescent, neon, high intensity discharge, and halogen lights.
